Online education will continue to play a key role, even though COVID-19 epidemic prevention and control measures have been normalized, education officials, experts, and teachers confirmed during a webinar held on June 7.
The event, entitled "Normalization of Online Education in the Post-epidemic Era," was held jointly by the Research Institute of International Education South-South Cooperation and TopSchools, a consulting firm focusing on international education.
More than 50 participants, including officials from international education industry-related sectors and heads of international education institutions, explored ways to better coordinate both online and offline education.
In an opening speech, Cen Jianjun, chairman of the Research Institute of International Education South-South Cooperation, said the pandemic had acted as a catalyst for online education, engaging millions of teachers and students across the globe.
China had worked hard to advance e-learning development and the country now was benefiting from the deployment and making further headway in educational infrastructure innovation and development.
CEO of TopSchools Ma Xiaoping said the epidemic had brought online education into universal attention. He believed it would be a long-term topic in the post-epidemic era, and more research was needed to further explore its potential.
Participants shared their best practices of online education, along with ideas on how to build it as a complementary tool even during normal school operations. Chen Zange, the president of Dalian Jiaohui Education, said assessments by school staff were the key to ensuring the effectiveness of online classes.
Though important, online education could not replace teachers' face-to-face guidance, some experts argued. Li Guibin, co-founder and CTO of Intelligent Learning, an online learning website, stressed the teachers' role in shaping the mentality and personality of students in the offline environment.
The webinar was the second of a series of conferences dedicated to the theme "Educational Informationization", following its serial activities on "Education Under the Influence of COVID-19."
